Years ago when I worked for ATT we invited Superbowl Quarterback Terry Bradshaw to our marketing conference. The conference was at Lake Lanier Resort north of Atlanta. As with most conferences of this type we brought our customers there hoping they would buy more telecommunications products. In previous years we had many famous speakers. However, this year was different... we had Terry Bradshaw! Now you may ask, "Isn't five time winning Super Bowl quarterback Terry Bradshaw famous?" Well, yes... but let me explain!
Terry's demeanor demonstrated he did not think of himself as famous. What a great guy! What a humble guy! The other speakers would show up only for the banquet. Terry showed up early in the morning to spend the day with our customers. Terry wore a crumpled plaid shirt with corduroy jeans. That night, at the semi-formal banquet... Terry wore the same shirt and corduroy jeans. I say all of that... to say all of this... Terry was one of those "what you see is what you get folks!" However, this is not the important part of the story.
There were a lot of 'supposedly' important people floating around that day and Terry certainly helped us sell some product. However, Terry also demonstrated something else. We had lost track of Terry and found him talking to a custodian. This custodian was trying to 'get out of the way' and Terry went after him to say, "Hello!" Those of us who witnessed this became Terry fans that day! You see, Terry cared about ALL KINDS OF PEOPLE. We all learned a lesson that day! Don't forget the hardworking folks in the shadows of our world. I trust you notice all the folks that God brings in your path... and especially those in the shadows.
