Gladys Aylward... from Parlor Maid to Chinese Missionary

All this week we are looking at missionaries. I have five favorite missionaries:
  • Patrick as in saint Patrick to the Irish
  • Bruce Olson to the Motilones (Bari) people
  • and today... Gladys Aylward to the Chinese people.
You will have to come back to find out the other two. In any event, when I get to heaven I want to meet Gladys Aylward (pronounced ALL-YEARD). This is one very tough woman. She was also humble and self-deprecating! And, she loved Jesus!

Spiritually tough people don't over complicate things! They don't have the time or the patience. Distractions of any kind, let alone endless contemplations and second guessing are annoying! Spiritually tough people are usually on a mission.  It doesn't mean they don't contemplate the great questions of life... they do! However, their faith in Jesus can be summarized in Moses statement in Genesis 18:25, "Shall not the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob do that which is right?" They learn to relax in the PROVISION of Jesus! Understand, some people want to be philosophers through life and others want to GET STUFF DONE! Some want to spend time contemplating their navel, and others don't have time to pick the lint out of their navels! Some people trust Jesus to be God, and others spend their lives trying to define Jesus. Which one are you?

In Gladys early days before China, Gladys heard a missionary talk about the great need for the people of China to hear the Gospel message. So, Gladys became a parlor maid to raise money to send her brother to the mission field. Just one problem! BROTHER DID NOT WANT TO GO! What was to follow was one BIG FIGHT! When the dust settled Gladys was haunted by the words of her brother... "If it is so important... then you go and be a missionary!" She had never considered that she could go! After all, she was a parlor maid.

However, in typical 'Gladys' fashion she became intent on seeing 'how she could go!" First, she signed up for a missionary school and was discharged because she was not 'smart enough.' Then Gladys went to the China Inland Mission thinking they would sponsor someone 'dumb or naive' enough to go to a dangerous place.  BUT, you guessed it! The agency officials said, "Gladys, you are not QUALIFIED or EDUCATED enough... you don't even have a skill." So, like my other favorite missionaries... GLADYS SENT HERSELF in 1930!

Gladys is one of those people no one ever notices. People who KNOW HOW TO WORK. The custodians, the caretakers, the working class, the parlor maids who make our world work... yet are never appreciated. So, despite ALL ODDS Gladys said, "Here I Am, Lord!"

Gladys could not afford the safer steam ship passage so Gladys arrived via the Trans-Siberian Railway. In the 1930s this was VERY DANGEROUS. However, if anyone could make it the determined Gladys COULD and DID!

And now it was 1940 in war torn China. Thirty-eight year-old Gladys Awlyard was about to take the trip of her life. Gladys was a missionary to Chinese orphans and the Japanese Army was quickly advancing on the orphanage. Nothing in Glady's life had prepared her for this moment. Of course, that wasn't exactly true. We often discount the subtle life experiences that God used to form our character. Gladys came from a British working class family. Gladys entire life was all about work and 'getting through' the challenges of daily life. You see, Gladys never had an easy life. In any event, Gladys was about to discover the ways God had prepared her.  So, Glady's grabs her 100+ kids and heads out over the mountains of China in an attempt to get everyone to safety. With a Japanese bullet wound in her shoulder! And this is not the only adventure Gladys and her children will experience. I suggest you read Glady's own book, "Gladys Awlyard-The Little Woman." It is available on Amazon Kindle for only $5.00! We need to read these stories to our children and GRANDCHILDREN!

You may also want to view the cartoon story of Gladys Aylward, "Gladys Aylward" on Amazon Prime Video by Torchlighters for $2.00.
Link

And of course, if you would like to watch the 20th Century Fox Motion Picture starring Ingrid Bergman then you can rent the famous, "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness."

Link

The Chinese believe in 5 Happiness's: wealth, longevity, good health, virtue, and a peaceful death in old age. So, the ministry Gladys Aylward and Jennie Lawson set-up was called the "Inn of the Sixth Happiness." This was an Inn in which Gladys and Jennie hoped mule team drivers would stop, eat, hear the Gospel and share it with the rest of China. In any event, it should not be a surprise to discover along with the mule team drivers that Jesus is the Sixth Happiness!

I trust you will take time to read about Gladys Aylward. Gladys went from being a 'foreign devil' in the eyes of the people, to being given a new Chinese name, Jenai, by these same people,  which meant "...one who loves people." And she did in the name of Jesus!

If you want to take a short-cut on your learning about Gladys Awlyard you can find her in Wikipedia. However, the book is better!

Gladys died in 1970 and I have placed a link to her obituary below!

An Encounter with Terry Bradshaw

Years ago when I worked for ATT we invited Superbowl Quarterback Terry Bradshaw to our marketing conference. The conference was at Lake Lanier Resort north of Atlanta. As with most conferences of this type we brought our customers there hoping they would buy more telecommunications products. In previous years we had many famous speakers. However, this year was different... we had Terry Bradshaw! Now you may ask, "Isn't five time winning Super Bowl quarterback Terry Bradshaw famous?" Well, yes... but let me explain!

Terry's demeanor demonstrated he did not think of himself as famous. What a great guy! What a humble guy! The other speakers would show up only for the banquet. Terry showed up early in the morning to spend the day with our customers. Terry wore a crumpled plaid shirt with corduroy jeans. That night, at the semi-formal banquet... Terry wore the same shirt and corduroy jeans. I say all of that... to say all of this... Terry was one of those "what you see is what you get folks!" However, this is not the important part of the story.

There were a lot of 'supposedly' important people floating around that day and Terry certainly helped us sell some product. However, Terry also demonstrated something else. We had lost track of Terry and found him talking to a custodian. This custodian was trying to 'get out of the way' and Terry went after him to say, "Hello!" Those of us who witnessed this became Terry fans that day! You see, Terry cared about ALL KINDS OF PEOPLE. We all learned a lesson that day! Don't forget the hardworking folks in the shadows of our world. I trust you notice all the folks that God brings in your path... and especially those in the shadows.

Next blog... Gladys Awlyard...

Bruce Olson and the Witch Doctor

I love stories where God intercedes on behalf of folks who want to serve Him. In almost all of these stories the experts in this world reject them. I wrote about Patrick who supposedly was not smart enough. What the experts often don't realize is that God is more concerned about your 'passionate availability... than your ability.' However, I have often discovered the 'abilities' so defined by the experts to be unnecessary hurdles. So, I guess I have a kinship... because the experts also said I could not be a pastor. The experts always like to build structures that place them in positions of authority to 'manage' people. It is about power! And power is often the main ingredient behind sin!

Bruce Olson was a Minnesota kid in high school who wanted to become a missionary. However, everyone, the experts again, said crazy stuff... stuff the everyone's of this world always say... "You are too young!" "You are not educated enough!" "You need to be patient!" "You are not funded!" "You are not sponsored!" So, Bruce SENT HIMSELF! He saved up to buy a one-way ticket to the Amazon Jungle asking God to go before him. Bruce was not sure what he was going to do or how he was going to serve.

Bruce arrived in Columbia and immediately sought out some missionaries. After all Bruce reasoned, they would probably appreciate the help. However, the missionaries rejected him. They told him to go back home. They told him he was another mouth to feed. So, Bruce left and asked God to open some doors. Bruce wandered out onto a university campus and started talking to a young man. Bruce was good with learning languages. He taught himself Greek and Latin while in high school. In any event, this young man was a radical Marxist. When the Marxist found out Bruce did not have a place to stay... the Marxist invited Bruce to stay with him. Who says God doesn't have a sense of humor? God must have said, "Okay, if I can't get the in-country Christians to help Bruce, I will go find an atheistic Marxist-Communist to help him!" God will ALWAYS make a way for the FAITHFULLY committed! Note: Don't ever doubt that God will provide!

Well, Bruce eventually ran into a medical doctor who lived on the edge of the Amazon jungle. He liked Bruce's energy even though he initially thought Bruce was naive. Bruce heard about the aboriginal tribes people in the Amazon and wanted to help them know Jesus. So, in typical 'anti-expert' fashion... Bruce just walked into the jungle to find them. Instead, it was the Motilone people who found Bruce and they took him back to their village. This village became home to Bruce. He learned to eat things that could not be found at your local McDonald's. Things that looked a lot like slugs! Yet, Bruce knew, if he was going to gain their acceptance, he would have to LIVE LIKE A MOTILONE! And, Bruce did!

You will have to read Bruce's book, "Bruchko!" It is the best missionary book I have ever read! It changed my life and changed how I view the ministry. If I ever teach a Pastor's course, it will be mandatory reading! Ironically, it is available on Amazon.com.  We serve a funny God!

Let me tell you my favorite story from the book. It will demonstrate how I have come to view ministry. Many people enter the ministry and want the folks they minister to... to be like them. To think like them! To hold their same values! Sometimes missionaries and ministers in general have been more concerned about teaching their culture than they are sharing Jesus! That is not being a missionary, minister or A CHRISTIAN!

One day, a severe case of PINK-EYE broke out in the village. Unless you've lived on a farm most folks have never seen untreated bacteriological PINK-EYE. The eyes can ooze pus and of course, PINK-EYE is contagious. In our urban settings we usually just see viral forms of pink-eye. In any event, the village Witch-Doctor would go from person to person with her incantations, potions, and dancing in a desperate attempt to heal the people she loved. Bruce noticed her crying one day and realized just how much this Witch-Doctor loved her people. So, Bruce decided to walk out of the jungle and go visit his medical doctor friend. The doctor gave him the appropriate type of penicillin and Bruce returned to the village. But there was a problem! Bruce realized if he treated the sick it would embarrass the Witch-Doctor. Bruce was CONCERNED ABOUT THE WITCH-DOCTOR'S status in the village. NOW THAT IS LOVE! So, Bruce goes over to one of the patients and wipes some of the pus from their eyes and places it in his eye. In a few days, Bruce developed a raging case of PINK-EYE. Bruce calls the Witch-Doctor to help and recommends she use this potion (the penicillin) in addition to her incantations and dancing. The Witch-Doctor had her doubts, but Bruce lovingly explained another 'doctor' had some success. Well, as you can imagine, everyone in the village was healed... thanks to the Witch-Doctor.

You see, sometimes we get our 'agenda' ahead of ministry. Later on Bruce was told of a tribal legend. The legend indicated someone would one day come and be their equivalent of a Savior. Bruce was later to build on this legend by telling them about His Savior. And guess what? The Motilones found Jesus! Today, it is estimated over 70% of the Motilones are Christians!

Go read the book! Tomorrow's blog is on Gladys Aylward! A British missionary to the Chinese people!

See you tomorrow!

Salvation Now!

There is today a lot of nonsense today regarding the CONCEPT OF SALVATION. Understand this... you have to be saved NOW! Not later! Not when you finally get all your philosophical questions answered! Not when your behavior will reach your  imaginary standard of holiness! Not as some teach today as a post-mortem option! BUT NOW! The Good Lord gives each of us something less than 120 years to live on this earth. However, I wouldn't bet on 120 years! Therefore, "Now is the Day of Salvation!" as we are told by the Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 6:2.

So, before I begin and just in case you don't read the rest of this blog, understand John 3...

  • You have to be BORN AGAIN! In other words, SAVED!
  • You become SAVED by believing in the One God has sent... His Son Jesus Christ. (see Romans 10:9-10)
  • There is NO OTHER WAY to be saved! It is the ONLY WAY to be reconciled to God.

Jesus said in John 14:6, "I am the way the truth and the life, NO ONE comes to the Father, except through me!"

This is a rather hard verse to get around. Yet, I often hear people, even Christians say stupid stuff like this...

  • "Well, there are many pathways to God... to each his/her own."
  • "Everyone has an opinion!"
  • "How can a Holy Loving God send someone to a lost eternity?"
  • "Well, just how reliable can the Scriptures be?"
  • "How could God let an arbitrary time of life on this earth be my ONLY decision time?"
  • "I am not all that bad of a guy/gal!"

All of these misguided responses ignore the most important question. The question Jesus asked Peter and the disciples in Matthew 16:13-20, "Peter, who do YOU say I am?" You will remember Peter responded, "Thou art the Christ!" And, in making that statement Peter realized he was speaking to GOD IN THE FLESH! Jesus is pre-eternal! Jesus is God! Jesus is not some guru who came to model a way of life... Jesus came to SAVE your life because YOU ARE SINNER! Understanding we are SINNERS is understanding humility before a HOLY GOD! Our Creator!

Let me explain a principle I have discovered through years of experience in my varied vocational life...

  • If you can't make a decision now... it is not any easier to make a decision later...
  • If you can't manage the world around you now and your current responsibilities... then you will most likely not be able to handle any other assignment any better.

We are all like cows wanting 'grass' that is on the other side of the fence. I used to be a dairyman. I loved to watch cows in the pasture. The cows would have access to a whole field of grass, yet... they strain against the barb wire to poke their heads through the fence to eat the grass on the other side of the fence. After all, says the cow. "The grass must be greener!" "I am entitled to my opinion!" "That's how God created me!"

We are like that when it comes to God's grace. God provides a whole pasture of 'grace' on which to graze, yet we want to poke our philosophical heads through the barb wire... to see if "grace" potentially has a different definition. Perhaps, we ask ourselves, "Through our own intellect, behavior, etc... we don't need the SALVATION as GOD DEFINES IT IN JESUS CHRIST!"

If there is one message in the Bible that is consistent throughout... it is this, "God wants to be in relationship with you NOW!" I do not believe in Jesus Christ NOW... only for the purposes of THEN. I believe in Jesus Christ NOW... for the purposes of getting through the NOW with Jesus. If that happens NOW, the THEN will take care of itself by the grace of Jesus! I am thankful for the proverbial 'pie-in-the-sky,' but I am just as thankful for JESUS WALKING WITH ME... NOW!

Imagine if Carol and I were dating some 45 years ago. When I got around to asking her to marry me I said something like this, "Carol, I like the 'idea' of marrying you. After all, I like you! But, I am not sure you are the 'only' girl for me. After all, is that not just a little narrow-minded?" And to continue, "Carol, I have a lot of questions about you. I need all of them answered before I can make any serious commitment. And, perhaps there are other gals that can help me to find happiness!" If I had taken that approach it would be only LANCE (my dog) and I writing this blog at the moment! A RELATIONSHIP TAKES UNENDING COMMITMENT!

Dear friends... sometimes in a world where we OVERTHINK things... we lose sight of the simplicity of life! We allow 'experts' to tell us that 'red' is 'blue' and 'wrong' is 'right.' Truth becomes so confounded... that you run out of time. There is only ONE TRUTH and that TRUTH IS JESUS! John 1:3 says, "In Jesus and through Jesus ALL THINGS were made!" Go and love Jesus YOUR CREATOR remembering John 8:32...

"You shall KNOW the TRUTH, and the TRUTH
shall set you FREE!"

So, let me ask you this... "Who do you say Jesus Christ is?"

God Bless... see you tomorrow!

saint Patrick

Patrick is my favorite missionary! You may know him as saint Patrick. I use a small 's' because the Biblical use of the term 'saint' applies to ALL WHO BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST. It was NEVER-INTENDED to be used to imply any sense of SUPER-HERO or SUPER-HEROINE status. I was preaching in my home Church one time and I mentioned that in God's Kingdom, ..."there are no big 's' saints." I didn't realize how this sounded to the ears of the folks in the pews. I think I woke up half the Church. They thought I said, "...there are no big @$$ saints." Well, at least I got their attention. In any event, 'saint' is not a RANK to be achieved. It is synonymous with the term 'believer.' And, if you were to ask humble folks like 'saint Patrick,' I am sure they would agree. The Christian faith is not made-up of spiritual hierarchies. We don't get rewarded black-belts matching some level of spiritual maturity. No! We get the honor of serving our Lord... and perhaps... just perhaps... being a part of alleviating some misery in this world. In any event, I am sure there have been many great missionaries who deserve equal respect. However, saint Patrick tops my list and here is why...

Patrick grew up in a wealthy ENGLISH home! Yes! That's right! Patrick was ENGLISH! At a young age Patrick was kidnapped by a band of raiders. These raiders took Patrick to  Ireland where the raiders sold him into slavery! One of Patrick's many jobs as a slave was to take care of the pigs. However, in so doing... God was preparing Patrick to serve Him in bigger ways. We need to remember, if we are faithful in the small things, God will trust us with greater responsibility as Jesus taught in Matthew 25:23...

"His master said, to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master."

One day Patrick had a chance to escape and was able to gain passage aboard a ship back to England. Of course, everyone was surprised to see him. You can imagine the shock and joy! Patrick was assumed dead and had been gone for years.

Patrick had been home for some time when God called him for a special task. Patrick felt God was calling him. God asked Patrick to return to the people and the land in which he had been a slave. Remember, God often calls us into the impossible so we can see God do the possible! You can imagine Patrick's emotions. I am sure it was a mixture of... "God are you nuts!" to "God, you are calling me?" Well, nothing ever happens overnight. Patrick shared his 'calling' with the Christian religious leaders and they basically said, "No!" They felt Patrick was not smart enough to enter the priesthood. They also had bigotry against the Irish. After all, thought the Christian leaders, "How much sense does it make to leave a comfortable wealthy lifestyle, to live in poverty... let alone danger?" You would have thought these 'Christian' leaders would have thought otherwise... did they know Jesus?????

Well, Patrick fooled all of them. No, Patrick was not a nuclear scientist but he studied hard and eventually entered the ministry. However, even after this accomplishment the leaders decided not to send Patrick... so Patrick did the obedient thing... HE SENT HIMSELF! Sometimes we have to remember our obedience is to GOD and not to earthly authorities.

You know the rest of the story. Patrick went back to Ireland. He lived in a cave in virtual poverty. However, Patrick had purpose in his life. Patrick had Jesus. So, Patrick traveled among the various Irish tribes in order to tell them about Jesus.

There are many legends surrounding Patrick and most of them probably are NOT TRUE. Such as driving the snakes out of Ireland or using the SHAMROCK to teach the TRINITY to the Irish. However, here is the eventual result of the combined ministry of Patrick and another missionary by the name of Columba. Ireland became a Christian nation and monasteries were created throughout Ireland. As Western Civilization started to collapse on the European continent it was the Irish Monks who not only saved the Bible for future generations, but also saved modern agriculture. These monasteries contained Monks who faithfully translated and copied the Scriptures. These monasteries became repositories for copies of the Bible and seeds!

We are celebrating saint Patty's Sunday on March 18th! Come join us as we celebrate God working in the lives of folks 'just like us' for God's purposes!

See you tomorrow!

Sermon: Nehushtan for March 11 2018

NEHUSHTAN
By Pastor Jim Allen
March 11th, 2018

The nation of Israel had been in the desert for less than 40  years.

And they were grouchy.

As far we know, and as far as we can understand, the only food was Manna and Quail.

Now God provided the manna and quail, but the good Israeli’s were longing for a good MacDonald’s hamburger just for a change of pace.

Every time folks started to complain, it was usually because the army of Pharaoh was moving in on them at the Red Sea, or because they were hungry or needed water.

God always provided for them, maybe not on their time schedule, but certainly on God’s.

After all, God is trying to develop their faith before they enter the promise land.

Kind of critical, and here is why?

If the Israelites could not handle the current difficulties in the wilderness, they probably will not be any good at handling life in the Promised Land.

Especially, considering the Promised Land is occupied by giants (Anakim) and other Canaanites who were kind of tough customers.

Here is a management principle: When hiring, don’t hire someone who is trying to escape a situation. If they can’t handle the problems there, they will probably not be able to handle the problems at your location.

There are always exceptions… but not usually!

Here is Personal Growth principle: If you are seeking to escape a situation as just described, and God does not seem to be answering… maybe you need to ask God how He wants you to handle the current situations which are distressing you… just maybe… YOU NEED TO GROW! OR, just maybe… YOU NEED TO BE HUMBLED!

In any event, the folks in the wilderness start complaining about the food and the Guy who is supplying the food is a little disgusted…

By the way, the Guy supplying the food is God. Just in case you are not keeping up with the conversation.

So, God, decides to send poisonous viperous snakes.

Now, God loves drama, IF you like to give God drama, He will give it back…
So, God allows the Israelites to walk into a viper’s nest and they start getting bit.

SNAKE STUFF: God did not necessarily ‘send’ the snakes anymore than God hardened Pharaoh’s heart. However, this did not keep God from letting His people be stupid by wandering into a viper’s nest. The possible type of snake would have been the Psammophis schokari. This snake, viper, serpent is called a racer and is very fast. It can run at speeds of 10 MPH. To give you an idea, the world’s fastest human Usain Bolt can run 100 meters at 28 MPH, this is a very short distance. A normal, in shape runner could run 10-15 MPH for a short time. The LIVESCIENCE website suggests human potential to max out someday at 40 MPH. For most of us however, we would not be able to out run them! Someone in my age category would be around 4-5 MPH. As a metaphor, if the given serpents in Numbers 21 are this type of snake, then the metaphor is further extended because these snakes are polymorphic. In other words, they blend into their climate. They are easily adaptable, Just like Satan is in trying to trick us. These types of snakes very in color and pattern from Northern Israel to the Sinai desert. You would think close proximity would make them homogeneous. However, they morph into the needs of their climate. This is similar to the idea of evil taking on the culture around it.

*** END OF SNAKE STUFF

Now, it should not be lost on anyone that the great Screenwriter in the Sky is using some metaphors.

The symbol of sin in the Garden of Eden was a serpent.

Because of the beguiling serpent in the Garden of Eden, the Bible tells the snake… from this time forth you will have to slither on your belly and I will put enmity between woman and you.

Ironically, National Institutes of Health study does indicate that…

Moreover, there is a consistent sex difference in the incidence of snake and spiker phobias; women are four times more likely than men to have fears and phobias for these, but not other stimuli (e.g., injections, heights, flying) (Fredrikson et al., 2006; MArks, 1969).

Now we always need to be careful about taking such studies to the bank… but it is interesting.

Scientists suggest this is an evolutionary response.

Woman are traditionally in charge of the home and children, and a stronger response against spiders and snakes is a protective mechanism.

*** ANECDOTE: Carol, Mary, Theresa and the Snake
One day Carol discovered a snake in our yard in Georgia.

Carol ran to get a hoe and entered into moral combat with the snake. Somehow… I feel sorry for that snake…

In any event, Carol started chopping away and as pieces of the snake would fly up in the air… a chorus of screams from our neighbors, Mary and Theresa would echo throughout the neighborhood.

Anyone looking at them that day had to have a good laugh.
*** END OF ANECDOTE

In any event, the Israelites should have considered this metaphor as they were running for their lives…

Run from sin… their complaining and lack of faith was SIN!

So, God must have thought, let’s make that ‘running from sin’ lesson at little more ‘interactive.

I mean think about it… other than people running for their lives, woman screaming, etc. It had to be just a little comical.

However, God offers redemption from the ‘snake bite of sin.’
We shouldn’t be surprised! 1 Corinthians 10:13… a memory verse… says…

There hath no temptation taken you such as is common to man, but God will, with the temptation, make a way to escape!”

And, that is where our story gets interesting… God gives Moses a command that breaks the following commandments….
·       Graven image…
·       No Idols…

Whaaaaat????

God says to fashion a bronze or copper serpent, a graven image, and put it up on a pole.

Then God says… if you are bitten, then by looking up at the serpent, you will be healed!

And so, many folks who were bitten did that very thing!

Now why, you might ask… did God violate two of His own commandments…

Here is why!

God was giving the Israelites of that time a picture of redemption that would one day come in the Lord Jesus Christ.

In addition, God was giving this demonstration so that Jesus could refer to HIMSELF as Nehushtan in John 3.

You will remember that Nicodemus came to Jesus asking how to be ‘born again.’

After some discussion, Jesus reminds Nicodemus, a religious leader of the story of the bronze (copper) serpent. Here is the story in John 3:10-21…

Jesus says, 10 “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man.[e] 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,[f] 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

As a matter of fact, this passage regarding the snake is key to understanding ALL OF JOHN 3.

God supplies REDEMPTION TO ALL, BUT ALL TO NOT ACCEPT GOD’S REDEMPTION!

Look at John 3:17-18 one more time…
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

God is not a God of condemnation! Remember, NOTHING CAN SEPARATE US FROM THE LOVE OF GOD! (Romans 8:28)

So, in this passage in John 3 we discover that Jesus (God) did not come to condemn the world, but we condemn ourselves by not believing.

In similar fashion, the snake bit Israelites would not die, if they believe in God’s Word (not the snake) to look at the snake.

Now here is a really, cool part! In 2 Corinthians 5:21…

21 God made Jesus who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Jesus we might become the righteousness of God.

Faith is critical. Even in the wilderness, God wanted the Israelites notice an object without sin, would be sin for them. Their obedient faith in believing God’s Words as given to Moses… would SAVE THEM!

You see, as Christ was raised up… JESUS WAS SIN FOR US! In order, that you could be declared righteous.

Now let’s get back to God breaking two of His own commandments.

First, as I have preached before, God uses things that are our weaknesses to often bring us to salvation.

I told you how I became a Christian because I was chasing a girl.

God knew my weaknesses at that time.

Just to make sure we understand each other, I no longer have that weakness.

I only have eyes for Miss Carol… now back to our story…

The Israelites were prone to idolatrous worship of graven images. It was prevalent in all the cultures around them and we know one thing for certain…

The Israelites seemed to want to be ‘like everyone else!’

In any event, God sometimes allowed what anthropologists call… sympathetic magic.

Sympathetic magic is a sin… but God knew that their weakness might be able to draw them to Him…

To get their attention… after all… people seem to more interested in ritual and hocus pocus that in a real relationship with the one true God.

Sympathetic magic is making an image out of the problem.

In this case, the problem is snakes… so the Israelites little pagan hearts would understand making a graven image in the form of a snake.

And, Moses had to get it done quick… the nation, the people were dying… that is why Moses used copper or bronze.

Plus, bronze represents mankind in the Bible.

God had done this method of getting the Israelites attention at least one other time… and it is kind of funny!

This story is found in 1 Samuel…

The Philistines captured the Ark of the Covenant in a battle with Israel. However, that’s when their troubles really began.

The Philistines brought the ark to Ashdod and set it up next to their god, Dagon.

The Philistines took the ark of God ... unto Ashdod ... into the house of Dagon and set it by Dagon. 1 Samuel 5.1-2

The next morning Dagon had fallen on his face. There is a joke there some place...

When they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face. 5.3

So, they put Dagon back in his place, but the next morning he had fallen again, and this time his head and hands had fallen off, so he was no more than a stump.

Talk about a god coming apart at the seams!

When they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him. 5.4

Then God started to get nasty. He destroyed the people of Asdod and smote those that survived with hemorrhoids.

Probably, it was swollen lymph nodes called buboes, but hemorrhoids are funnier!

But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with hemorrhoids (hemorrhoids). 5.6

So, the people of Ashdod decided to send the ark to another Philistine city: Gath.

What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither. 5.8
And then God smote the people of Gath, the small and the great, with hemorrhoids in their secret parts.

The hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had hemorrhoids in their secret parts. 5.9

After that, what do you think the Gathites decided to do with God's ark? They sent it to Ekron.

Therefore, they sent the ark of God to Ekron. 5.10
When the ark arrived at Ekron, God did the usual thing: he killed most of the people and gave the rest hemorrhoids.

There was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there. And the men that died not were smitten with the hemorrhoids and the cry of the city went up to heaven. 5.11-12

The Bible doesn't say how many people were slain that day in Ashod...

When the ark of the Lord had been in Philistine territory seven months, the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the Lord? Tell us how we should send it back to its place.”
They answered, “If you return the ark of the god of Israel, do not send it back to him without a gift; by all means send a guilt offering to him. Then you will be healed, and you will know why his hand has not been lifted from you.”
The Philistines asked, “What guilt offering should we send to him?”
They replied, “Five gold tumors and five gold rats, according to the number of the Philistine rulers, because the same plague has struck both you and your rulers. Make models of the tumors and of the rats that are destroying the country, and give glory to Israel’s god. Perhaps he will lift his hand from you and your gods and your land. Why do you harden your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh did? When Israel’s god dealt harshly with them, did they not send the Israelites out so they could go on their way?

Now you might ask about the Gold Rats?

The Gold Rats were part of the curse!

Many commentators believe these were not hemorrhoids but swollen lymph nodes.  Here is what Mayo’s indicate are the symptoms of bubonic plaque…

*** MAYOS: Bubonic plague
Bubonic plague is the most common variety of the disease. It's named after the buboes — swollen lymph nodes — which typically develop within a week after an infected flea bites you. Buboes may be:
·        Situated in the groin, armpit or neck
·        About the size of a chicken egg
·        Tender and warm to the touch
Other signs and symptoms may include:
·        Sudden onset of fever and chills
·        Headache
·        Fatigue or malaise
·        Muscle aches

CONCLUSION
2 Kings 18:1-4
18 In the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Hezekiah son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign. He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Abijah daughter of Zechariah. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father David had done. He removed the high places, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles. He broke into pieces the bronze snake Moses had made, for up to that time the Israelites had been burning incense to it. (It was called Nehushtan.)

You see how stupid, how pagan, even believers can descend to be?

God’s people forgot about God and started to worship the object.

We are not to worship the cross, but our Lord who died in our place.

So, understand the tears in God’s heart on this day of Nehushtan, in which God commands Moses to break His commandments…

You see, God was looking that day at His people with disappointment… and simultaneously looking forward to the day Jesus was on the cross and died.

The day, in which God had to die for us!

A day, in which the law, the commandments had to be broken for you and for me!

May God Add His Blessing to the Reading and Teaching of His Word.
