Transfiguration-Mark 9:1-9

MONDAY

This week we are looking at Mark 9:1-9 (Transfiguration). The corresponding Old Testament Scripture is 2 Kings 2:1-12 (Elijah goes to Heaven-Alive). I am adding one more Old Testament passage from 1 Samuel 28:3-25 (Witch of Endor).

As you can tell from all three passages, they involve a demonstration of God's authority. Our passage from Mark has Jesus and his disciples, Peter, James and John meeting with Moses and Elijah. Huh? At this time, Moses and Elijah have been dead for at least 1300 BCE and 750 BCE years respectively. How can they show up around 31 AD? We will explore their strange reappearance this week. Are they ghosts? Do we become ghosts? The answer to the last two questions is, "No! Don't be a knucklehead!" No such thing as a ghosts!

In 1 Kings 2:1-12 we have the famous story of Elijah being taken to heaven alive. Elijah is only one of three people in the Bible who were taken to heaven while alive.  Can you name the other two? In any event, Elisha becomes Elijah's replacement.

In 1 Samuel 28:3-25 we find the strange story of King Saul employing the Witch of Endor (medium). The Witch makes contact with the prophet Samuel who had been dead for many years. This becomes the final judgment for the ending of King Saul's reign.

Read the passages for tomorrow and I will start going verse-by-verse....

God Bless... Pastor Jim
